Mono Potassium Phosphate to lower Nitrates

3.5 gal nano tank with plenty of plants, fish, and shrimp.
Fish are healthy and shrimp are multiplying - the plants are doing nicely too. I dose with Seachem's products and use their dosing schedule. I do a 40% water change weekly.

I was going along nicely with 5-15 ppm nitrates and then they dropped to zero.
So I decided to add Potassium Nitrate and now I can't get them back down - in the 40-50 range.

I read on one of the threads here that mono potassium phosphate will help to lower the nitrates.
Anyone have experience with this technique?
Thanks

If the Nitrates went up after adding KNO3 then if you stop adding it or reducing dosing, increase water change, etc it should lower it, otherwise it's coming from what's in the tank, primarily waste/organic decomposition.

That's what I was hoping for - I stopped added the KNO3 but didn't increase my water changes (still just once a week) but the Nitrates don't want to settle back down.

Do water changes every other day. That is what I did when nitrates was in the 40s.

What fish do you have in the tank?

I have 4 Featherfin Rainbow's and 7 Celestial Danios
Will the mono potassium phosphate help at all?

I'm getting the feeling that your tank hasn't been setup that long. That seems pretty tight for those fish.

These fish and shrimp in a 3.5 gal nano tank!! The rainbows need a longer tank. The 7 Celestial Danios are enough. You are overstocked. No wonder your nitrates are high.

Nothing but more water changes is going to help a tank that is overstocked.

Everything was really ok until I added the potassium nitrate.
I got the rainbows because the Danios would always be hiding - now they are all out all the time.
I will do water changes every other day and see if that helps.
Thanks
