dosing a discus tank?

hi i just got my new discus and i have dropped the co2 and stopped dosing ei for the next few days to let them settle in.

is there any issues with re-starting after a short period and if so should i be dosing less or will the discus simply adjust to the dry ferts going in?

also wondered if the 50% weekly change is gonna be too much at once for them or would it be better to do 2 25% changes split across the week and would this still reset the parameters of the dosing?

lots of questions in one thread but im on a steep learning curve with the discus and although ive done a lot of background research on the fish themselves i dont know anything about them and heavily planted tanks

2x a week 30% comes out close to the same a weekly 50%, whatever works well for you.

Cannot over do water changes.

Lower light + good current + good plant care = good place to discus. Here;'s a tank I did for a client:

They have bred and the angels as well.

EI, low light, good water changes.

hi tom
you answered my post about a polysperma deficiency in the plant section the other day

my tank has halides in 1.5 hour session 2x daily is this an absolute no no ?

with regards to dry dosing is it just standard dosing or do i need to reduce the ei method to accomedate the discus?

this is the current setup

i nearly lost all 5 discus yesterday i got them home from the shop and put them in the tank with a 1 hour accimatisation which i realise now was way too fast

all seemed well until they had been in for around 5 hours and they all began laying on their sides and gasping for air

i realised that me co2 was on full throttle and the drop checker was yellow.
i have had the co2 set like this since the tank started and none of the small fish have batted an eyelid but i guess discus require a lerger oxygen content in the water

i thought they were gonners but i switched off the co2 and did a 150l water change
within 2 hours they were all right as rain and today they seem fine

my setup is 6ft x 24h 18d
co2 is via an inline external reactor to a spray bar
substrate is eco complete
im dosing ei method
turnover is x18
total volume is 512 litres

im hoping to get some more in 2-3 months time but i want to get everything right for the 5 i now have and go from there
