Newbie Water Hardness Confusion

Getting ready to start a tank and bought a GH/KH testing kit. Did tests on several samples within our house and am now completely confused. It appears that our water was a "4" in GH, and apparently a "22" in KH. This seems somewhat backward and not possible. Any thoughts?

Do you have a water softener? From what I understand a water softener will remove GH but not KH.

But replace it with sodium... It will jack up your TDS, too.

Why do you want to soften your water? I breed L144 plecos and dwarf cichlids in liquid rock...

Re:

I'm just trying to understand whether or not I should use our tap water - and yes, we do have a softener. Is the water useable right out of the tap at these levels? We will have many plants and a community/peaceful tank of Rams, Rasboros, Tetras, etc.

When you refer to your "tap water", are you talking about it after the water softener treatment, or before? Some people have their water softener configured so that it only softens the water going to some taps (i.e. there is no point in having your toilets on a water softener).

As mentioned above, using a water softener will also increase your TDS, as you are simply replacing the calcium and magnesium cations with sodium cations.
