Osmocote under Black Diamond Media?

I have (roughly) an 18" cube tank that I am putting together. I'm going to be running black diamond 20/40. How much osmocote should I run UNDER my substrate (ie will be on the very bottom) if I intend to put an inch to 4 or 5 inches on top of it? I know this varies based on intended substrate thickness, just looking for a ballpark. Or should I be considering some other solution altogether?

A light sprinkling is all I ever do. If you know it will be very deep in a section, add the osmocote over top some of the sand in that area so it isn't 5" below the plants. I'd say 3-5 balls per square inch would be more than enough depending on plant choice. I'd err on the side of less and adjust based on deficiencies.

How long is this O+ good for if I might highjack a bit.
I'm sure given its submerged it releases faster than example a potted plant?
