Mixing 4dKH Solution and Bromothymol Solution in the Drop Checker

Mixing 4dKH and Bromothymol Solutions for the CO2 Drop Checker

How much mL of 4dKH and number of bromothymol solution drops do you mix to put inside the CO2 drop checker? Some kits say - use 3 to 5 drops of bromothymol solution, other kits say 5 drops or until the color of the 4dKH solution turns blue. The blue color can range from light blue to dark blue depending on the number of bromothymol drops is used. The kits also say to fill the drop checker half full. Does it matter if the drop checker is filled 3/4 full or 1/3 full?

What's your comment on these varied directions? Thank you.

I use a fullish dropchecker(4dkh), with 5-7 drops BB, without opaqueness. WORKS GREAT! c-change within an hour!

Methylene bromide? Where did you even get the idea to use this from?

The drop checker indicator is bromothymol blue. You can use anywhere from 3-8 drops. I like a darker colour to make it easier to see the colour changes, so I tend to use more drops. As long as it is translucent (and not opaque), then you are fine. If you use too few drops, then the colour changes tend to be difficult to observe.

As for filling the drop checker, it does not really matter if it is 1/3 or 3/4 full. Aim for 1/2, but if you are a little over or under, it does not really matter.

A drop checker will react fastest if the amount of liquid in it is minimized and the surface area exposed to the air inside is maximized. So, something around half full for a spherical ball type drop checker is very likely to be the best level. For a cylindrical drop checker you need enough to be able to easily see through the thickest cross section of the liquid, but as little liquid as you can do that with.

I used the word methylene bromide because I could not remember the exact name of the reagent (the BB bottles don't have the ingredient label). Thanks for the correction.
