Dosing Pfertz N - should it register on Nitrate test?

If I'm dosing the Pfertz high tech package and wondering, should the addition of Pfertz N increase the nitrate reading in a water test? My nitrates are reading zero and I'm doing the recommend amounts (1 squirt / 10 gallons / 2 days) with a full fish load.

Using API tests that have a batch mfg date in Q4 2009. Nitrate did register as high as 10-20ppm when I was cycling in Feb.

I also tried mixing up a small bottle of deionized water with a full pump of Pfertz N. It also read zero (and the doing concentration must be 100x recommended).

Just want to make sure that this fertilizer dosing should indeed register on a water test for Nitrates before I go buy another kit...

Thanks.

Either Pfertz is selling you bottles of pure water or your test kit doesn't register properly. Not hard to figure out which of the two you need to ditch... the cheap test kits are not worth relying on.

How are your plants doing?

Hoppy has posted some helpful sticky strings regarding how to calibrate the test kits. Without doing this your chasing your tail.

You could add nitrates and test zero in the tank if the plants are consuming it all. If you mixed the ferts with DI and tested zero, then I agree there is a problem. Nitrate test kits vary in accuracy, but nitrates are easy to detect.

Wasn't sure if Pfertz N = nitrate but it sounds like that's the consensus.

Going to go pick up a Salifert kit. Calibrating won't help me as it seems to read zero no matter what. Good thing I didn't nuke my CRS trying to get the nitrates up.

Thanks everyone...
