Low tech EI style fert

I have neglected my 55 gallon and the plants are kind of defficent. I have a light fish load and all I have done is top off, feeding and once monthy waterchanges, and my plants grew slowly. I noticed that for a week after waterchanges my plants grew and then over then next couple started looking defficient with small and torn up looking leaves. I want to get it looking nicer.

I have fluorite black sand, 120 watts power compact with a good reflector, and moderately planted stems, crypts, and swords. Just today I put the good reflector on, before it was slighty worse than an aqualight one

I already have a complete set of standard dry ferts whatever is in the package that rex grigg? used to or still sells so I was thinking I could make an EI liquid set that was like 10x? more dilute, kind of like the flourish fertalizer.

My question is, how much slower is growth in this type of aquarium vs a higher tech full EI tank, so I know how much more dilute of a batch to make than full strength(Ive seen threads on here with amounts of fert/amount of water to use and Ill just make one of those diluted)

Neil

Not sure how "low tech" this tank really is. That is pretty decent light for a tank that size. Why not just EI for a while and keep up with the water changes. If you want to get crazy, try cutting dosing, but I think Tom will agree that EI is only a guide.

Do you have CO2?

Start with the lower dosing in the EI guide and see how things go. After you get a feel for how things are doing (couple of weeks) then you could think of backing off.
2 watts per gallon of even average sort of T-12 light is at the higher end of low light. I would add some Excel into the system, too.

I dont have co2, but I do dose excel

Can I do EI with no Co2?

This is about to be a shrimp farm, so I would rather keep a lower amount of nutrients and less water changes than full EI

Thanks for all the help!
