Activated charcoal will remove the chelated metals (micronutrients) from the water column, but will leave the macronutrients alone.

As such, you will want to avoid using activated charcoal.

Finally, many people on these forums use Purigen as an alternative to activated charcoal, as it is supposed to leave the nutrients alone.
