Questions on setup

Hello I’m new here and have a few questions. I have a 55 gallon tank with a few low light plants and some stem plants as well while running a finnex 24/7 cc on the 24/7 mode. I dose with excel once a day and flourish once a week. I just don’t think my plants are doing too well and I see that algae is starting to form. I was wondering if the finnex is too much light for low tech as it says at 21 depth is 60 par. I don’t want to use co2 but I want my plants to grow since I bought a 150 dollar light. Any suggestions on what to do??

Please provide as much of the following info as possible (some you may already have):

- Light (make & model): ideally, PAR and PUR reading at the substrate and photoperiod?
- CO2 setup (if any) and, if you inject CO2, what is the CO2 ppm level and how is it measured?
- Current NO3, PO4, GH, KH, pH and TDS readings?
- What you are dosing (product and quantity) and how often?
- Substrate type and how long has it been in place?
- What is your filter setup?
- Cleaning regimen (filter and water change frequency and amount)?
- Circulation: surface rippling and are all plants gently moving from top to bottom?
- What is your water source and do you use a water softener?
- What is your tank size?

Finnex planted plus 24/7 cc I believe par is at 60 for 3 hours at 21 depth.
No co2
I’m using excel once a day with flourish once a week
Substrate is flourite
Fluval 307
I change 10 percent every week of water
I use an air stone for the circulation

How much livestock do you have? What are your nitrate and phosphate readings? What about PH, KH and GH?

Flourish is a micronutrient supplement, you also need macronutrients. Such as Nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. Depending on your water you may also need calcium and or magnesium.

Bump: Also in a new tank, especially, I would do larger water changes, 50 per cent per week is a good starting point.

Hi!
I am also new here and to all this fancy modern Fishkeeping in general 🙂
10 years ago, I’d just stick an amazon sword in my blue gravel and see what happens.

In my newly found, more enlightened way back into the hobby, I also purchased a Finnex light.

Mine is Finnex Planted+ 24/7 HLC Aquarium LED Light

So.

I am still learning all the ins and outs of it. There are DO many buttons lol

I think it is hard to get caught up in the INCREDIBLE amounts of knowledge and info looking for the perfect answer.

I read many posts here and other forums, watch tutorials on YouTube for this particular light.

With keeping those in mind, it is trial and error.
It is all going to depend on the special magic in your aquarium.

Try dimming your light. Or leaving it on for less time.

Or maybe there are too many nutrients. Try dosing a bit less and see what happens.

I know this is a WAY less scientific or exact answer than some of the ones above. But you really kind of just have to test stuff out and make educated guesses.

Good luck!!!
