Tannins

I love having a tea-colored aquarium. If I put driftwood in a tank, leaching tannins is just part of the ecosystem.

Cheers

Its also actually good for the fish as well, if you don't like the look of it you can boil the driftwood for an hour before adding it to the tank which helps, or purigen in the filter.

I used Purigen once, and it was very effective. I tried to follow the re-charge instructions I found on the web, including multiple sessions of rinsing and treatment. When I tried to use it again, my ecosystem crashed.

I'm sure if you were good at chemistry, you could recharge effectively. However, I think most people use Purigen and then throw it out, adding to the micro plastics in water.
