54 gallon walstad low tech tank

Hi all,

So I've found myself in a wonderful situation of getting a 54 gallon corner tank this weekend. I want it to be a planted tank based on Diana Walstad's method. So it's going to be dirted, low tech, lots of plants, and good fun. I'm looking for any help with this. I have Walstad's book but am struggling a bit with it. I would love any suggestions or tips or help from anyone on anything who has had success with Walstad's method or for just assistance in general. I do have hard water (about 9 dKH and 4-5 dGH when testing my tap water).

Thanks everyone!

I'm lucky if I get 5% and I consider myself an educated person. but I struggle on.

I would recommend detailing what specifically you are having trouble with.

A few weeks into a walstad tank myself, and I would recommend that if you want it to be truly hands off (eventually), go gravel and not sand.

+1 for plant heavy.

Hard water less of an issue if you have a ton of healthy greenery drawing in nutrients.

Dunno if I am qualified to answer this... I don't know much about the walstad method but Ive kept a 10gal with a single betta fish for several years with just sunlight and water top-offs.

Basically just 10 gal with black Amazonia sand, Rotala rotundfolia plant, 1 betta fish, bunch of snails. My tap water is naturally hard with pH 7.8. I have a full lid over the tank so it loses very little water to evaporation. I placed it near a window (but not in front) so it does not receive too much sunlight.
