What happens when a Fluval LED Fresh & Plant 2.0 “dies” at 2 years 10 months old?
If you have read some of my threads you will see I have been a strong proponent for Fluval LED light fixtures since July 2016 when I did a comparison of Fluval, Satellite, and Finnex fixtures prior to the purchase of my first LED fixture. In my conclusions in the post I listed why I chose the Fluval 2.0 versus the other two choices.
“Why did I decide on the Fluval F&P 2.0 over the other units?
1) 120 degree lenses
2) Much better warranty than other choices (3 year verses 1 year or 6 months)
3) Warranty backed up by Fluval/Hagen with service center here in the U.S. and an 800 number.
4) Fully sealed unit, no moisture issues to deal with
5) Did not need ‘automatic’ ramp up/ramp down….all of my tanks are on digital timers”
I purchased my second Fluval F&P 2.0 in October of 2016; it was the 48” version for my 75 gallon aquarium when my 2 year old Marineland LED fixture died (it came with the tank). Fast forward 2 years and 10 months after purchasing the a 48” Fluval 2.0 LED fixture for the 75 gallon to the beginning of September of this year.
Historically the fixture would occasionally change intensity or cycle from white to blue light of its own accord from shortly after I got it. It was a minor issue and didn’t happen often. However, in August of this year it starting doing those actions multiple times per day. Needless to say, it became frustrating very quickly and I knew I had to replace it.
I checked and I had two (2) months left on the three (3) year warranty period. I called the “800” number for Hagen / Fluval and talked to a very friendly, professional customer service representative who listened to my problem. He gave me an e-mail address and requested I send a copy of my purchase receipt (I save all receipts for equipment in folders for each tank). He e-mailed me a case number with directions on how to return the fixture (my expense) and what to include in the box for documentation.
Things got busy so it was a month later that I finally sent the package (via FedEx Ground) to Hagen in Massachusetts. It took a week to get to Hagen on the east coast from my home in Seattle.
Two days after it was received by Fluval/Hagen I received notification that a replacement unit had been shipped. A week later it showed up at my home. It was well packaged and arrived undamaged. I unpacked it and plugged it into my digital timer. I set all of the color channels to “maximum” using the Fluval app and have had not any issues whatsoever since.
So what is a warranty worth? In my case about $200 plus tax and freight!
On a side note I also run a 2X55 watt AH Supply power compact fixture with a one hour photoperiod on this 75 gallon tank. I used to have a problem running the Fluval 2.0 and the power compact simultaneously; the Fluval 2.0 would go crazy changing from white to blue to off repeatedly. Apparently, the Fluval 2.0 did not like the EMI from the ballasts on the power compact. Now, with the Fluval 3.0 (aka Fluval Plant Spectrum) I can run both the Fluval and power compact simultaneously for a "noon burst" without any issues.
