I try and set my tanks up to be as self sufficient as possible.
After my tanks have done my kind of 'cycling' they produce their own food and basically clean themselves.
Occasionally I wipe a few stray algae from the glass.
Though, it hasn't been a problem through the years.
The key is to NOT overstock the ecosystem.
Heavy planting helps as well.
This is a small 5 gallon I have set up, if you can make a 5 gallon self sustaining then you can do any size tank.
It is easier to do larger set up because you have more 'sway room' with the parameters.
