I've had java ferns do real well on nothing but indirect sun light - don't stick them in the gravel; tie them to the rocks. Ditto anubias. Crypts might make it in the gravel, and you could toss java moss just about anywhere ... although, come to think of it, crayfish (crawdads, what ever) will sometimes tear moss to shreds; they might do the same to crypts. If the tank gets plenty of sun, but doesn't heat up too much, you could try floating a few sprigs of hornwort in there ... if that works, though, be sure not to let it take over (trim it now and then): bettas like to have some open surface space for an occasional gulp of air. In fact, floating plants may be your only safe option with the crayfish (depending on species; I know some people have had no difficulties keeping certain crayfish in planted tanks - but with a wild-caught species, you're best off playing it safe).

thanks a lot! eventually i plan to divide the tank in half and use one side for keeping eggs and small fry, and the other side for larger fry that aren't yet safe to put into the community. once the tank is like that (probably with sand in it instead of large-sized gravel it has now), i'll put in some anubias and a ton of java moss for the fry to hide in/under. Maybe some rotala indica as well, i have a crappy light over the tank now, and i'm getting rotala for my other tank soon.

Giraffe Fish (Girrafticulostus Afrecaos) Very delicate spiecies to look after and is a single specimen spiecies only. This one looks like it has almost reached full maturity and is very healthy, well done on keeping such a hard fish! :D

When yr giraffe fish reaches maturity, it'll get territorial and eat your anubias. Find it a new home at the zoo before it's too late!
