Yep, I third that. I sometimes drive all the way from Renton to The Fish Store cause I know the fish are better and they have varieties I can't get elsewhere (at least not consistently).

Avoid Petco. You are close to the best fish store in the Seattle area. In fact, it is called The Fish Store, and it is on Roosevelt north of Ravenna Ave & S of 65th. They are great, with healthy fish, wonderful supplies for the planted aquarium, & very competitive prices. They also only have people working there who REALLY know their stuff.

If you want plants, check first at the Fish Gallery in Renton. Their prices for plants are about half of what you'll pay at The Fish Store. I just compared prices on Sunday and the same plant was $6 at The Fish Store and only $2.50 at Fish Gallery (same size plant).

Another excellent store is the Blue Sierra Exotic Fish in Issaquah. Good price on live stock. Not so good for plants though.
King’s Discus is a small store on International District. Good store for angels and Discus. Again not so good in plants but it was the only place that I could find Anubias. |

I only purchased fish one time at the Blue Sierra. The cardinals were so traumatized from the capture and bagging procedure that two were dead in the bag by the time I got home. The worker really swept the net around hard trying to get the fish and then the 1st bag broke and they were violently transferred to a 2nd bag. Then, that bag broke and one fish was launched onto the counter. He just swept him off the counter back into the bag. Several fish were swirling around in the bag before I even left the store and they assured me they would be OK! Two died on the way home and two more died within hours after I got home. They did refund my money but I decided I would not risk it again by getting more fish there.

From time to time I prune and end up with plants that are not nice enough to sell, but too nice to chuck. Mostly comon stuff like val, sage, and ludwigia. Just depends what takes off at any given time. For example my pearlweed/baby tears are taking off now. Next month might be crypts...
I will be willing to trade with anyone who can pick up in North Seattle. Extras generally end up at GSAS.org. Support our LFS's! |

Just my two cents: my favorite is the Fish Gallery in Renton. The Fish Store has a good variety of both fish and plants, but the fish gallery has the friendliest staff I've ever met. They never make you feel silly for asking questions and they always approach me to ask if I need help with anything. I think a knowledgeable staff makes quite a difference! Plus they have quite a selection of plants.
