Maybe I have this backwards in my head, but I'm confused. The sumps I've seen have been below the tank, and I've never had a chance to examine a setup, so I don't know how it works. It seems to me that being that the sump is below the tank that gravity would draw the water out of the tank and into the sump unless the sump is sealed. How does this work? Does anyone have a link describing contruction? Thanks again.

1st you need an over flow basket, this pulls the water out of the tank to the sump, (the over flow basket also has a pre-filter on it). after the water passes through the overflow basket it falls into the sump, inside the sump you can keep other types of filter media, and your heaters plus your protein skimmer. after the water passes through the filters and protein skimmer it is pushed back to the tank by a water pump.
I hope this helps

You might swing over two the forum at ReefCentral and look how the pro's set up sumps. Refers love to play with PVC, I think it's the solvents.

The specific gravity of freshwater makes a protein skimmer close to useless in a planted tank. You get better results from your water changes.

Anyhow. This thread is about sumps so here are some pics of the one I am setting of for a reef tank. Water flows over the weirs and down the standpipe into the sump, it gets pumped back into the the tank via a hose and the white pipe with the outlets. here is the sump the sump is a standard 4 foot tank. |
