Tiger Salamanders

Ok, I got a new 40 gallon aquarium for $40 today and I want to put Tiger Salamanders in it. I was thinking 2 of them. I am going to make it so that there is water in it up about half way and then have gravel on both sides so that the water is in the middle and have 2 hills. Any suggestions? What do they eat? What should I have to heat and what temp. do I need to keep it. Anyone have them? If so any pics? Would you post about your setup? Thanks

Tigers would actually do much better in a terrestrial setup with a small water dish. One stop sallie info at www.caudata.org and some more at www.livingunderworld.org

OK my dad caught these salamanders that are really cool and they look like this http://www.forestry.caf.wvu.edu/imco...mander%203.jpg . I'm not quite sure whether he caught them or not but since they were with some little ringneck snakes dudes i figured he did. He just left them in my aquarium and left for the day. Now how should I keep these? Should they be kept like tiger salamanders? the name i got off of google for that pic is a spotted salamander. Now how he would have caught 3 at one time I have no clue but anyway i have them. That is the closest picture I have but I read that they were most commonly confused with the Eastern Tiger salamanders. Judging by this chart that shows there range ( http://www.npwrc.usgs.gov/narcam/idg...igrin.htm#east ) I figured it could be them since I live in the VERY top of Arkansas. In this case what would I have to have to house them? I have them in my empty 40 gallon at the moment and i just covered the top and put in a water bowl but what do I do now? thanks. Ill try to find out at much as possible.

(EDIT) also i was looking at the first link at it says that they are also found in Arkansas so it could be either one. I think it is the Spotted though as i saw both pictures at the same time and that one stood out more and I am positive that is them

Because Tiger Salamanders spend the majority of their adult lives living underground, in burrows they dig themselves or those dug by other organisms. If you want to build a half-land and half-water paludarium, it would be much better suited to a more aquatic species.

The Tiger Salamander would be much happier in a terrestrial terrarium with a moist substrate which allows the creature to burrow and hide. A water dish large enough for the salamander to soak would be a good idea, in case the substrate becomes too dry and he needs to re-hydrate himself.

Adult tiger salamanders can eat crickets, mealworms, earthworms, caterpillars, and if the salamander is large enough, pinky mice.

Cheers,

I dont know about the tiger salamanders, but spotted salamanders are mole salamanders, meaning they spend most of their lives underground, coming up during mating season to deposit eggs in vernal pools. So even if you kept them, you'd probably rarely, if ever see them. But honestly, in my opinion, I'd just let them be and release them back. There have got to be better suited species for the home terrarium.

I wouldn't keep the WC ones, couold be detrimental to your local population if there aren't a whole lot of them.

Salamander, in the most part, are terrestrial creatures.

Newts on the other hand are mainly aquatic.

salamanders ussually spend little to no time in the water unless it's when they're young, obviously they're born in the water.

but a terrestrial setup is best, and still yet you may never see them.
they're reclusive animals.

If i were you, i'd make a sweet viv. out of that 40 breeder and read up on poison dart frogs, or phelsuma(day geckos).

www.dendroboard.com is a great place to start with PDF's.

Some dart frogs are extremely bold, even begging for food, and easy to breed for the mostpart.
