40 Breeder tank journal (56k warning)
Well I'm about to set up my second planted tank. It is a 40 gallon breeder. The tank cost me $130 all together. The tank, glass top and heater were $70 and the filter was about $60. This is Canadian not US dollars.
Specs so far: AC300 Playsand substrate 300 watt heater (hey, it was ten bucks) Here are some pics (I haven't scrubbed down the tank yet) http://www.zippyimages.com/58793.html http://www.zippyimages.com/58795.html I was very fortunate to get the tank so cheap. Also, the back was already painted that blue color. I will be updating this journal as the tank progresses. Justin

I have a 40G breeder and I love it. I will be setting it back up tomorrow after having moved from Upstate NY to Florida. The width is superb for layering plants. I'll be watching your thread.

Well thanks for that.
Now for my first question. I got this tank from a pet store, used. I have to wash off the old algae and buildup that has hardened on. Will water and vinagar to the job?

Vinegar will be fine for cleaning the tank. I've used it on several tanks to help get rid of hard water deposits.
Just be sure to rinse afterwards with alot of hot water until you no longer smell any of the vinegar. Let it try, smell it again, wash it out again. |

Well I cleaned it out and it looks quite good. The vinegar was quite diluted so I couldn't smell it much in the first place. That darn sword on the tank was painted on so I had to scrape it off with a razor.
My local fish club is doing a bulk order from some place in the us. I ordered 20 cardinal tetras for this tank at 65 cents each. I might also get a nice pleco such as a gold nugget pleco. They are only like 12 bucks or something.

Okay. I have the whole tank up. It's been up for 72 hours. I had to do 2 100% water changes to get rid of the dust from the sand. I even washed it before it went in the tank. Then I planted it with the low light plants from my 20 gallon. It's still bare but I'm gonna fill it up. I should be recieving my school of 20 cardinal tetras soon.
I have a little question. I am going to have no co2 on this tank so I was wondering what light levels would be the best. Right now I have 60 watts but I was gonna slap another 40 on for 100 watts of pretty scattered light (shoplights, no reflectors, lights from 40 watt will over hang one foot). Also, what plant species should I stick to? I was thinking anubias, crypts, maybe a sword plant and any others?

It's amazing. When there is no moving fish the camera takes nice pictures. Hehe.
If anyone can help Identify the plants that would be awesome. I know the name of only a few.

They're not working for me either. I tried downloading them and opening them, but I got an error message that the jpeg marker is incomplete...

Update.
With my local fish club I am taking part in a bulk order. To stock my tank I am getting 20 cardinal tetras and one gold nugget pleco: L-18 for approx. $28.99 Can. They are also wild caught. I think this will be all the occupants of this tank. I think the colors of the fish will look awesome. Very bright. And I love the price. The only place around here to get the gold nugget plecos from breeds them and they are nearly $100 a piece cause he also has to ship or drive them down to you. Any comments?
