Excessive MH light (usually from hanging too low) may cause problems to your plants.
can you explain what type of problems you faced with having the MH this close? I have not seen any problems so far and as i live in a very cold part of AUS the temp is not a problem...

Based on experience and observation on fellow tanks, I see that excessive MH wattage and hanging too close will only result in burnt plants and neverending algae problem. Aerial leaves tends to dry out by the strong lamp (because they are hang too low), plants tends to get much more light than they need, they grow algae, turn pale from light, etc .... tipical of "high light disease".

Hanging higher or switching to lower watt MH actually observed to be highly beneficial; better algae control, no more burns, better plant quality, more managable tank.

However it should not be heat related problem since you are staying somewhere cold.

You may try it as is right now and consider my thoughts later on if things keeps going the wrong way. Just my 2 cent.

Thanks Medicinman.. i will keep that in mind when the plants some next week and if they have troubles i will try the higher hanging method ..

supaflyz This is my first big tank. I have three other tanks, a 5gallon nano, 20 gallon, and 35 gallon that i have boken down now. Keep in mind i am only 15 so i have not really had much oppurtunity to have big tanks yet but i am loving this one so expect some more in the furure

P.S today my mazzei venturi arrived and i have it set up! It is an awesome thing and chops up the CO2 into millions of very tiny bubbles. I dont think these bubbles have that much affect on the display. I will post pics later tonight or tomorow..

I'm considering using the mazzei venturi for my CO2 as well. Can you post pics when its done or anything about it would be great. That should really get things growing.

You're quite the industrious 15 year old... when I was that age I was saving up for a boat, but my parents made me get a car instead. If I could have done it differently, I probably would have forgotten both car and boat, and done what you're doing now.

Dylan! That is one BEAUTIFUL, BIG(!) glass tank pal! Good job!

Can you feel the envy coming at you from across the water? I'm feeling it, to be sure! But I'm happy for you. That's gonna be awesome when you get it up and rolling!

Thankyou Steve and others for your kind words. But Steve can YOU feel the envy coming straight back over that big blue ocean about your tank haha

Pics of venturi will hopefully be up tonight.

P.S Scolley i got the venturi working a bit better. The PH is still at about 7.5 during the day. (i have the AC jnr to turn off CO2 at 6.9) At night i hope it can come down better and stay there!! Also the sump agitation is now GREATLY reduced Thanks to me adding more water too it and also reducing the overflow flow..

Keep it up! You'll get it. It's just gonna take some tweaking.

Nice tank. What are the dimensions?

Also, what's the advantage of using a venturi rather than a standard CO2 reactor?

I'd like to see some more pictures of the sump. How are you setting that up? A sumped FW tank would look really slick.

Great job so far. Can't wait to see the final results.

hey,

Her are some pics of the venturi rig. It is a 3/4" mazzei venturi. I don't know why it is brown and not black but it still works so i don't mind. It didn't come with a barb fitting on the suction side so i had to improvise haha look tack y but who cares. This is a beast it pumps out so many miniature bubbles of CO2 its not funny. They look like clouds as they come out of return pipe, thats how small they are. I must thank Scolley for helping me calibrate this thing as i was having a few troubles. I have finally got the PH down to around 7 after having problems getting it down. Now hopefully i can keep it there without draining my gas bottle!

pics

My plants are coming in on Wednesday so will be posting pics of scape on Thursday my time.
