I tend to end up with a 2-3" depth in my tanks. Even with terracing it ends up sliding forward over time. 2” is enough depth to hold most plants that fit grown out in a 55g tank. Eco and flourite subs ended up being just under 3" in my 75's and the Walstad syle tank is 1" soil and 1" flourite.
