What is the avg mm size of soilmaster

I am about to put an order in for some soilmaster charcoal and would like to know how the avg size of the granuels compares to that of flourite? Is its weight comparable to flourite or is it lighter/heavier? And most importantly will HC root well in it? thanks

Thank you,
Ry

I just set up a tank with soilmaster a week ago so I can't help you with the long term question of how things root, but I can tell you the stuff is LIGHT. I have a 55 gallon tank and I ordered two bags thinking 50 pounds might not be quite enough. One bag was plenty for a 3in. depth though, and I didn't even worry about opening the second one. The size of the granules is about 1-3mm, which is, I think, smaller than flourite, although I have never used that. It seems to hold the plants down fine, I havne't had any problems with my stem plants coming up even though my gouramis pick at them. HTH. I wish I had known about this forum before I ordered as the information I have seen on here would have prevented me with so much extra on my hands! Oh, well.

I just bought some as well, but havn't had a chance to plant in it yet. It is much lighter than flourite. The grain size is pretty consistant.
Here is a picture of it on a quarter.

Not to get to far off, if you want to see some more pictures of the stuff, coinciding with another thread on here, check out this link.

I will be doing some other pics and comparisons soon.

I'm not sure about how the HC will do in it but my glosso is doing just fine. I have no problem planting with it even though it is light. I wish I had found this stuff along time ago.

how light is light though. If I use a python to vacum the soilmaster will I have to be worried about the soilmaster getting sucked up as well?

Thanks,
Ry

Sorry for the dumb question but what is the advantages of using Flourite other than it contains some nutrients and would it make a difference in a low-med light tank or in a planted nano tank over the conventional pea gravel.
