Not necessary but they are great filters.

great bio filters but not really needed. shrimp are low bio load. one thing to note on those if the power goes out the bacteria dies quickly.

well i read about them when theres a power outage there is a high risk of of killing the bacteria but they dont really die quickly like an instant.

anymre comments??

im planning to add a coralife 3X 9w turbo stwist aswell just incase i get green water algae..

I have a sand bed filter on my 75 gal and it works great since it is over stocked, but not sure how it would work on a crs tank as it produces a lot of flow. They also aren't any good for mechanical filtration and you would have to have another filter for that purpose.

I don't think it would be to your advantage to have one on that tank.

well.. im going to run the FBF through my canister filter..so that it will only have one flow all together..
iknow that shrimp have a low bio load but i was thinking in the long run.. if ever they reproduce more and more which is for sure then it will add up

(counting the dead and the reproduction, the ratio is 1:4
this is base in my 20g tank...)

I'm wondering whether you are referring to a "Fluidized sand filter" or a "Deep sand filter bed".....? They are 2 different things. A while back, I was looking into the "deep bed sand filter" that some of the reefer folks use. I was/am really interested in it, but when I started researching it for FW and planted tanks--I managed to get distracted and have not gotten back to it. From what I was gathering, they don't offer the same benefits that they do for SW.

Note: Comments above are in refence to the "Deep bed sand filter", not the "Fluidized sand filter" that the OP was asking about....

Just wondering if someone is actually running a DBSF on a FW tank......?

no, they wont die quickly, it's the same as if your canister style filter stop working. no flow ect. the only difference would be a wet/dry style filter system which would die faster than those other filters cause most of the bio media isnt submerged.

granted in a FBF there's alot more bacteria per sqft so maybe the would use up more life resources resulting in a faster dying rate but for the most part it wouldnt be difficult to recharge (just get the power back on)

They are the best BIO filtration, but a can will keep up because shrimp are not much of a bio load. I would do a sponge filter intake so that there are bacteria in the tank, and in case of power outage ammonia will not build up

@ OP

I don't think its worth it, many just overfilter as is. I've got 40+ in my 10g with just a little toms rapid mini canister. Also notice how they're cheating ebay?

@Naja,

I think its concept is about the same, have you talked to the people like Anthony Calfo who are the biggest supporters of this stuff?

Not really as mine is a fluidized sandbed also, and I was just giving the person an example using mine.

my concern is that i can dish out a couple $$$ for my high grade if its gonna prolong their lifespan ... i iknow i can get my $$$ when i sell some ..

thats is why im asking about the FBF ....
