Default Dwarf Blue Crayfish?

Last year a guy had dwarf blue crayfish for sale on aquabid. They seemed popular but they have since vanished. Anyone know what happened?

Are you sure they weren't just cambarellus shufeldtii that were blue? They take on lots of different colors and patterns. I've had some pretty blue dwarfs over time

He had selective bred these to be blue, but i think that may have been the species.

I think I see some on ebay. This one is orange

I heard that you can selectively breed out certain colors, similar to the procedure done with the shrimps in this forum.

there is a selective bred blue dwarf cray, but they are like blue tigers in that not all offspring are blue, though they all carry the gene. thats what makes them so hard to come by. i also read some posts a while back on their being a little more hard to keep and breed than standard c. shulfeltti's. i think Pedro (milalic) has them, but i havent seen him sell any yet. i did get the orange ones from him though, and to be honest they were more striking and colorful.

Yes I've heard the same. Also that they weren't the striking blue usually but just a little blue in most cases they where very hard to get a good strain going and I believe most of the people trying gave up when the trend ended.

I wonder what the orange crayz cost these days.... I want some.

Yeah I have some moss/shrimp addiction problems. At least I'm not in the red because of them, yet.

Those orange crays are Cambarellus Patzcuarensis. There is a pair for sale on Aquabid with a starting bid of $59.99
They are bad @$$

They also sell from german sellers but shipping is crazy from there. Mike at aquaboyaquatics used to sell trios, but he has apparently left the hobby.

you are right. Most of them lose the color. It seems to be something in the environment/food/defense mechanism.

I have one that is almost black color, but reverts to its ligh brown color once in a while.

Glad the expert finally chimed in......Milalic thanks for the information. I had purchased a set of these over a year ago and after several months they turned a brownish sort of color. They were happy, just not blue any more.

Thanks again,

chaz
