white and red worm?
I got about 5-6 yellow shrimps from someone about 1 week ago.
So I put them with my other yellow shrimps and tigers. After 1 week later, I hardly seeing my baby shrimps and I saw 1 dead tiger and 1 dead yellow this morning... What I saw on some shrimps were small white? and red? worms inside the shrimps... I think it came from those 5 yellow shrimps... They did look sick. It looked like worm infection that cause them to death... So I had to remove some shrimps that didn't have worms to other tank and now I having about 4 yellows and 4-5 tigers with worms... They do look ok but, soon or later they might die... I took few shrimps and try to take out worms with my tweezer but they are so small and I couldn't see the worms unless if they are in the water. But, I manage to save 2 shrimps taking out worm. Other shrimps, I think they have to go before they cause more worm infection... Anyone had this problem? |

Hi There,
I have never had a parasitic infestation in my shrimp. I have only seen this problem in ghost shrimp. I'm sure that it could occur in other species as well. Most people quarantine new shrimp for this reason. I don't want to sound like the voice of doom but by moving out the one's that don't look infected might not help. Sometimes they are already infected and you just can't see it yet. By moving the shrimp into other tanks you might infect those tanks as well if there are shrimp already in them. Do you have other tanks that do not contain any shrimp? I would suggest that if you have them available move all infected shrimp into one tank and all non looking infected to another. I don't know of any parasitic food or medication that is safe to use in shrimp. There might be something out there, I just am not aware of it. Maybe someone else here is more knowledgeable in how to rid your shrimp of the parasites and can help you. Best of luck to you, let us know how you make out.

If I can get a picture...
My camera isn't that good. Any ways, I had to remove them to new tank I had been setting up for 4 weeks. I had to leave about 3tigers and 3-4 yellow shrimps. On yellow shrimps, you can tell if they have worm or not. I have been looking very close to each shrimps... (only had about 14) Tiger shrimps, it's kind of hard to tell but, you can see close and see the worm moving around them. Sadly... when they die, I have to put some medication and redo the tank. |

try adding mammal dewormers in the tank... One come to mind is levamisol.
It might kill the shrimps but I don't think you have anything to lose but there is a good chance it'll work.. Levamisol paralyzes round worms specifically.
