Default crs tank

I'm planning on making my cherry tank into a cherry/crs tank. I have pretty much everything figured out right now except the substrate. I know ADA aquasoil would be good for the CRS, but my water already has a KH of 1, and a low GH too. My PH is right around 6.8, so I am wondering if it is necessary. I would think about getting maybe just some flourite instead. Would this work out alright?

ADA would hold your PH around 6.4 to 6.5 using 6.8 PH Tap water and your CRS would like it better than 6.8 water. They will however do OK in 6.8 if that is the way you chose. I used to keep mine in around 6.8 to 7.0 and found that the lower PH of 6.5 makes the shrimp more colorful and higher survival rate of young.

Cheers, Bill

6.8 is fine for CRS. With ADA, becareful about the Ammonia spike.

I have my CRS at about 7.2 and they are fine. just a FYI.

IMO I would save your money.

yea, i knew about the ammonia spike and all with the ada, so I'll try out some fluorite and see if everything goes well. I'll probably start up a build log once I have everything in order.

Whats the point of fluorite? What is your substrate now?

6.8 is pretty good PH for them. If you want to drop the ph a little more. Look into PEAT or Dry Oak or Almond leaves.

I would also stick to what you have and try to save money rather then spending money on ADA Amazonia. Your PH like some have said is good enough for crs. I have mine in 7.5 and I just swapped it out with ADA waiting for the ammonia to drop.

well right now I dont have anything to put in the tank substrate wise. i want a nice black or dark substrate, so I figured the black flourite would be the way to go with a planted tank as well.

One thing you should try is 3m Colorquartz t-grade Black. its an inert substrate but you can spinkle some Peat before the colorquartz. I use this substrate right now and LOVE the contrast of the CRS on it!!

The peat should also help bring the PH down as well.

i tried looking for that before but the only place really near me that sells it will only sell to companies, so I wasn't able to get any. If there's any other place to get it I would probably be interested in it

hmm i have some left over about 35lbs of it. I could sell you some. I'll get like a flat rate box and see how much i can stuff in there...

I was going to sell all 35lbs for $15.

I have a 29 gal tank and only used like 15lbs...

In my opinion if you are going to be buying substrate anyways then you might as well use the ADA aquasoil as its going to cost you about the same as the black flourite will.

well the ADA will cost like $85 with shipping, and I can get the flourite for half the price. Is the ADA aquasoil really worth it?

I would just grab some black sand and call it a day. I got some Moonsand from my LFS and a $20 bag gave me a 1inch cover in my 55g.

Spend the extra cash another way, because you'll need it.

would eco-complete work for this? My LFS has a few bags of this and I have some store credit there so I can get it for reasonably cheap.
