Eco complete has been bad quality in recent months due to them switching sources for their substrate basically. Its been raising peoples PH.

I would just get some tahati moon sand your lfs should have it, I paid $20 in credit for mine.

I'm not sure if they have it, but I think they got the eco-complete from someone that sold it to them. I'll check it out and maybe they'll have some other black sand.

rrogan-

To be honest. If your going th CRS route. Just get the ADA Amazonia II.
I did not get this b/c I rushed the process. I already had a cycled tank and RCS in it. I didn't feel like waiting for the Ammonia spike from the ADA soil.

In the long run, you will have lower ph and wouldnt have to worry about it AND soft water due to the Aquasoil.

IMHO if I would do it again. I would go with the ADA soil. yes it cost more.. but less headache in the long run.

one question about the ADA aquasoil. I know it lowers your kh and stuff which lowers your ph. My ph here is around 6, maybe less, so will the aquasoil raise the ph or lower it even more? The water conditions I was talking about before is where the tank is gonna be kept most of the time. I want to get the tank setup here and cycle it and all before it's moved to the other location. Also could I mix a bag of eco-complete with some aquasoil because I can get a 20lb bag of eco complete for $8 at my LFS. I looked at it today too, and It looks like its all black with no mixing.

Then its the old one and should be fine. It may raise your gh and kh a little over time but nothing major

Now lets see the tank get going!

I just found a local source for CRS, I'm gonna be getting 12 A/S grades for $65. Not too bad. So yea, I need to get the tank going. The good thing is the filter I'm going to use on the tank is already cycled. I should be getting the tank setup over the weekend. I'll keep you posted. I'll pick up one bag of eco-complete and if that doesn't fill in enough, I'll get some color quartz or black sand. Time to start preparing for the build...

The ph in my tank is also 6 or below. Amazonia will lower your ph, by how much I'm not sure.

What Ph can shrimp survive in?

I've seen someone say their ph was around 5 with crs, but that was with co2 too I think. I'm not sure how low it can go. I'll just stay away from the ADA soil

rrogan-

Like I mentioned. I think your safest bet is to get an INERT substrate. Since you water is already 6.0PH... Have you checked your other parameters? KH/GH ?

Since you found a local source. you should ask that person what their setup is like. Maybe go there and then go back and try to mimic that setup. It will be less stressful for the shrimp.

Well someone bought all the eco-complete there so they only thing they have right now is black pebbles which I'll pass on. They'll have some TMS on thursday but I'd like to try and get the tank setup over the weekend. I'm still looking for a local source for 3m colorquartz atm.

Luichenwai- My GH and KH are really low as well, like around one or lower. I will ask about the params and stuff that the source has too. I think they use ADA aquasoil.

Would just normal black gravel work? I can get that quickly, or otherwise I'd have to wait almost a week in order to get anything else either online or at my LFS. Will it be ok for plant growth, or are other substrate better.

How much eco complete did you get? All you need is about an inch unless you want to grow some really rooted plants...

Thats a good price on the shrimp too.

I wasn't able to get any because the next time I went back the 2 bags were gone. I didn't buy any the first time because I wasn't sure about it, and I didn't think someone would buy it within a day. So now I just have an empty tank and I'm trying to find something to put in it.
