Default Shrimp Tank Filtration

I was going to get a canister filter today for my 40 gal. shrimp tank. Either a Rena filstar xp3 or a Eheim II Pro 2026.

But I'm nervous on spending more money at the moment. So I was wondering if two aquaclear, a 200 and and 150 (50gal. and 30. gal) with sponge over the intake would be enough?

Would I really need a canister filter because I wouldnt think that the shrimps would create a lot of waste right? When would I have to consider a canister filter?

I guess what got me concern is all the talk that Cherries and especially crystal reds require very clean water because of their sensitivity to it. I want to keep RCS and CRS in it eventually and the only plants in there would be moss.

On the side note if I see a Eheim II Pro 2026 for about $110 shipped is that a good deal?

You can get the aquaclear and use sponge for intake. Also, having one air sponge filter isn't bad for your shrimp tank. Always good to have air running on your tank. Far as hangon filter goes, I would perfer to get eheim liberty 2042 instead of aquaclear because eheim itself have this red nob where you can control the water drop so that you don't bother the shrimps too much. Aquaclear doesn't have that... I use 2 eheim 2041 and 2040 plus 1 air sponge filter for my 10g tanks. I also use eheim ecco, (forgot the model...) for my 20g tank and they do pretty good job. If you don't want to spend on too much money look for these. Any ways good luck with shrimps~!

I think the Eheim classic style are the best. On all my 50 gal shrimp tanks I use the 2217 canister filter.

If I do spend any money it'll definately be for a canister filter, no more hang ons.

So is what I have good enough?

Another question I posted earlier.
On the side note if I see a Eheim II Pro 2026 for about $110 shipped is that a good deal?

I bought my eheim ecco 2236 canister for I think $80 or $85 with shipping for cheap price. You do not really need Eheim II Pro for your 40g tank. Too expensive... but, $110 with shipping, sounds not too bad. Like gabe said, classic style are the best. That is true and I also think ecco is good one as well. So I would rather look into ecco or classic.

I over filter my shrimp tank with spongefilters. I have three sponge filters in one 10gl. I don´t really need to, but I preffer to have the beneficial bacteria in there, plus it allows for them to have detritus and what not to munch on.

I was thinking about getting a Rena Filstar XP3 for my 50 gallon. What do you guys think?

Is that too strong (it does have an adjustable noz.)

Or should I just stick with my two aquaclears?

Default Filtration for your tank

I am a firm beliver in sponge filters and there are several models you could adapt a power head to or just run air driven with good benefits for your shrimp. All my tanks are now run on sponges and in concert with live plants, the water quality is excellent.

Is this a shrimp only tank?

If so unless you've got some extremely hard to keep shrimp I would just buy a few good sponge filters, maybe look into a HMF and maybe a power head* to get more water movement if needed.

They don't poop that much It amazes me the amount of filtration some people are running. Heck, all I do is top off the water these days on all my tanks. after its an inch or two low

Yeah I have some moss/shrimp addiction problems. At least I'm not in the red because of them, yet.
