I want to keep some Cherry Shrimp in my Propogation 10! tank. I want to keep it simple with no heater and maybe just a sponge filter(in tank). The tank gets to 65* at night and 70-72* during the day. Do you think that this is doable and still have them breed? If not what would you suggest for a shrimp to breed(and not ghost shrimp). Myabe a Cray.

Cherry shrimp are hardy and more adaptable than the other dwarf shrimp. They will do just fine in the conditions you have mentioned. Just keep up with the weekly water changes and they will breed especially if you keep them fed.

Sac might be a little cold, but here in socal I have a 10 gallon outside I throw plant trimmings in and it isnt anything but an aquarium, sand and plants. No heater, no filter, no circulation and there is a steady colony of cherries that have been in there for 2 years now. Probably one of my most interesting tanks with all the daphnia and ostracods and whatever else is in there. Nighttime with a flashlight and a beer makes for some pretty cool stuff to watch.

They are fine in cooler water, I dont know how cold they can survive but they have lived outside in a tub in my garden and it has had ice on it a few times this year. I think rapid changes in temperature would be a problem though, I keep the tub in the shade so that it doesnt heat up too quickly in the day.

Yeah that is a big problem with outdoor setups. You cannot control alot of the variables. |

the fact that they breed faster at higher temps is due to the shrimp's metabolism rate, which depends directly on the temperature. They virtually "live" faster at higher degrees F. The downside is that they also die earlier. Cheers Ulli |
