I basically moved my entire colony to a new tank because the aquasoil in my old tank needed to be either replaced or cleaned. Basically after a couple of years there was just too much mulm and soot build up under the first inch of soil. I think it's just a situation with my tank because 1. It has been running for over 2 years and 2. I have a ton of shrimp in the tank so the waste builds up pretty fast. Now that I have 2 tanks I plan on keeping the higher grades in 1 tank and the lower grades in the other tank. This should hopefully give me at least 2 more years before I have to do anything to the tank again.

I don't use a standard gravel vac because I have sucked up a few tiny shrimpletts in the past that didn't make it. I basically have a air hose cut on an angel with a long type of chopstick taped to it. I use it as the same way as a gravel vac would be used. I basically stir up the soil to get the lower layers into the water column and then suck out the soot with the hose. It's a time consuming process, but I only do a w/c every 4-6 weeks so it's not that bad.

I like the taped chopstick idea- that's quite clever!
