Yup, definitely the place to go looking for some candidates are in the garden centers (I go to some nice mom and pop places). Some patrons will give you a weird look when you're down on the ground exposing the foliage to look at the root structure .

Another excellent place to look is at estate sales, where the owners have passed on, and have left a piece of their work behind.

Harry Tomlinson is who you mean...

Some other good authors are Peter Chan who i have stood next to and Peter Adams. Colin Lewis is another top bonsai grower. I have a load of books by them all...

http://forum.bonsaitalk.com/ is the best place i've found...

I went the wrong way into the hobby. I'm not patient enough to try to train my own bonsai. I've always loved bonsai trees. They are gorgeous. A few months back I bought a 12 yr old juniper bonsai on an impulse. Now I'm trying not to kill it. I know I should keep it outside but I live in an apartment complex. Anybody could easily steal it from my porch. I have it in my bedroom in front of a large east facing window. I have a tendancy to forget to water my plants (that's why I'm so good with aquatic plants ). So I ended up killing my moss carpet and am now battling spider mites on the bonsai itself.
