fert tabs needed w/ onyx sand?

I'm setting up a 20g 'long' tank-moderately->heavily planted, 65W PC lighting, and ~45lbs. onyx sand. do i also need to buy fertilizer stick tab things, or does the onyx sand supply enough nutrients to the roots?

I would say it depends on what kind of plants you want. Stem plants, no. Root feeding plants, yes.
