Mandy-
Thanks for the info- now I finally have the 411 on L.A. area lfs's. I'll have to make time to go to some of them. Re. Upwater Depot- what did you mean "they can retrofit an Eclpise hood in 15 minutes"? Retrofit with what? That's new to me and I'm curious about it.
Thanks again!

Hey again,

Eclipse retrofit - Well anyone who has bought an Eclipse knows unless you're very handy and willing to live with a juryrigged set up, you can't really do anything about the lighting in an Eclipse 3 and you can't just easily replace the hood because the filtration is built into it.

The guys at Underwater Depot didn't blink. They used a retrofit made by coralife that they pulled apart and stuck right into my fixture. Okay, I had to bend the reflector a bit to get it to close, but 65 watts sure beats what I had!

Hope that helps!

Cool!
I didn't even think of that. Nice to know it's a possibility.
Thanks!

I would add Tong's Tropical Fish on Whittier Blvd in Whittier, for those of you in south Orange/north LA counties. The owners are making a foray into planted aquaria. They managed to track down a tank load of very healthy, fingerling sized SAEs within a week. They sporadically have some interesting plants. The store is well organized and cleaner than most LFSs.

Discount Tropical Fish on La Habra Blvd in La Habra has fairly good plants, especially if you go early on Mondays (they get plant shipments on Sunday, these days.) Under new ownership. Always willing to trade plants/fish. They also stock good plant supplies such as Flourish, Eco-complete, etc

I didn't know there was a Tong's on Whittier. There's a Tong's in Fountain Valley (great), and a Tong's in Brea (near Brea mall on Imperial- I was underwhelmed), I wonder if this one is linked to one of them? I'm hardly ever north of the 91, but if I ever am, I'll make it a point to stop by.

Re. Discount Tropical, that's where I got my first tank back in '96- they gave me a great deal on a 30g tank/stand combo. I also bought my 100g from them last yeay, for $200, which was the best deal I could find for a new glass tank at the time. They have a good selection of fish, but I question the conditions of the tanks. I saw a lot of dead/ sick fish on my visits. But all in all, a nice mom-n-pop type of store.

Update on Tong's Tropical Fish - 15250 E. Whittier Blvd.

The owner is getting into plants in a big way. They've set up some nice display tanks and currently have some great Amazon swords and Anubias. I'm hoping to convince them to set up their plants the way Albany Aquarium does, with good lighting and CO2 and more varieties of stem plants. On my recommendation, the owner ordered a bunch of small SAEs. She got them within 10 days. They sold so well, she ordered a tank load of adult sized SAEs which she's selling for $5.95. Best looking fish I've seen outside of Albany Aquarium up north. If you're in the area, stop in and encourage them with a purchase. Great fish and supplies, too, by the way.

I'd like to add Pasadena Tropical Fish (PTF).
They're located on 2982 E. Colorado Blvd.

I must say that i'm quite suprised with their selection. It's better than most (if nto all so cali LFS i've been too..i have not been to Tongs in Whitter). They have some plants, but many are dying off. Nothing a bit of tlc can't help. They had quite a few swords and even some kleiner bars. Sometimes they have glosso.

What suprised me the most:Cherry Reds and Bumblebee shrimp!

Neptune's Reef in Torrance is IMHO the best overall store for fish AND plants. They have big and beautiful show tanks (marine and plants). There are many tanks with fresh, marine, and brackish water species. The store is big and roomy. The owner (John if I remember correctly) is a fish/plant guru and very nice as well. I think this store is worth the drive EVERYTIME I go. My favorite LFS. Running a close second would be Mark's in Studio City. It's very similiar to Neptune's Reef in terms of quality and prices; my only complaint is that it is rather small and crowded in there. But the tanks are all top notch! Plus they have a pet parrot! Strictly Fish is also a great store. It's the closest quality LFS to me and I visit quite often. I love it when they have their annual/semi-annual sales! Last but not least is Aquatic Fantasy in Redondo Beach. This store has the biggest tank I've ever seen in person; it measures roughly 8x8x4. It was a marine tank so they had some big fish in there. Very beautiful tank! The fish selection is quite good there but it is saltwater only (at least when I went). These are the four best LFS that I've been to. I'm sure there are other good one's out there that I got to visit. I hope this post helps anyone interested in visiting these locations.

Ooo! I've never been to Neptune's Reef! Can you tell me if it's very close to the 91 and/or the 405, and some basic directions? I occasionally find myself near the 405 and Artesia Blvd. for business (my boss lives there), sometimes with a little time to kill.
Thanks!

Well I get there via the 110 exit PCH. You can take the 91W and get the 110S. Turn right once you exit the 110 and take PCH for about 3-5 miles. Neptune's Reef will be at your right in a small shopping plaza. Crenshaw Blvd. is the last major street before it. Once you see Rolling Hills Way be ready to make a right to get into the shopping plaza the store is in. The store is roughly halfway between Rolling Hills Way and Robinson Way. Enjoy!

I'd like to add another fish store located in Upland.

Total Tropical Fish
1043 W. Foothill Blvd
Upland, Ca. 91786
(909) 982-2214

Their saltwater corals and such are very nice. Their plant selection, although their plants look rather sad, is pretty decent. They had alot of crypts, ricca, rotola indica, wallichi, java moss, fern and i could of other plants. If you're local and lookign for some plants i'd drop by and check it out. Those who live in irvine/la/oc probably have a better selection out there.

Their co2 equipment is outrageously priced though. 5lb alum co2 tank was 130. Single gauge, solenoid valve regular was 120ish. They had some boyu diffuse, i believe the larger one for 24. Another no namer ceramic diffuser for $15.00. They carried all 3 of nature amano books.

All in all it's pretty nice store. Small selection, but the people seem very interested in the hobby and your needs. This place is replacing my LFS for RO, so i can update on any new plant selections bi-monthly.
