Low tech tank carefree for one year!

One year ago, the beginning of the tank:

It has been a year since I start this low tech tank. My goal was to setup a really maintenance free tank.

Here is tank after one year.

Some update. Still no water change, no filter clean etc. Basically maintenance free. The best thing is no algae.

During a year, I did 2 times 50% water change. No dosing. no trimming. No filter cleaning. Clean the glass every 1 to 2 months. No gravel vacuuming. Add 1 gal tap water every week without even adding prime. It is algae and snail free! I have tried planted tank for 8 years. This is the best I got. I do had some short algae outbreak. But it is much easier to deal with compared with high tech tank. I got brown algae, BBA and thread algae for short period time. All of them are caused by some dramatic change. After the tank was stable, they went away soon.

Very nice! I am thinking of going low tech myself; just tired of having to prune every week.

Very nice!!

I would like to know more about the tank. What size is it? What are the plants?
What is your light strip, T8?

Thank you. The tank is 46 gal bow front. Most plants are Blyxa, narrow leaf java fern, crypt, Anubias and java fern trident. Nothing is fancy... I use 55w PC 6 hour/day. Eheim 2217 filter. CO2 injection.

Its beautiful! I've done something similar with my 80 but its nowhere near as lovely as that. Due to having my son 9 months ago my tanks have mostly been ignored for around a year. My 80 is very natural looking, plants growing wherever they want, random crypts and vallis shooting up all over. Can I ask what that plant growing all over is in your tank? I know you've listed them but I don't know which it is. The bright green one?

Nice, very much like a jungle. The CO2 probably helped very much. Without it, there's no way those plants could've taken off like that.

My understanding of low tech:

low light, low growth rate etc which leads to most important of low tech: low maintenance, no routing water change, no weekly trimming, no a lot of water test and clean up.

It is Blxya. Because of the low light, it grows towards light which makes it grow in 3D... With bright light, it will be brown color. It is bright green with low light which looks good.

The addition of CO2 makes it not quite low-tech but still easy maintenance I guess. I highly doubt you'd get the same results without it.

good thing there are no hard rules on what makes a tank low/med/high tech.

if you want to get picky about a tank using technology, you may as well drop the filter, lights, and anything else that gets plugged in.

co2 technology isnt all that advanced when we're taking into consideration how the light we use is created.

tank looks freaking amazing though. love the growth.
