Nismo Tetra's 20 gallon UPDATES AT POST #9
UPDATES AT POST #9
Would like to say Hi! to the fish board. I'm still learning this whole planted tank side of fish keeping with water quality etc. Have been doing research on this site and have to say thanks to you guys. I am not new to fish keeping in general. Here are some additional picture's of the 1,500 gallon fish room we have. Mostly Big predatory amazon based fish. A couple of rare species and some undescribed species of fish. Excuse the picture quality, It's hard to reduce glare lol, I'm no photographer http://www.webshots.com/user/nismosilvia240 just click on the FISH ROOM album, lists of fish in tanks are under the pics in black lettering. My 20 gallon tank nova extreme 2x 24w t5 bulbs. 10,000k and 6,700k (10 hrs) 2 bags eco-complete DIY co2 with hagan elite-mini air stone on night timer small whisper filter on the side to put current long ways through tank PLANTS 2 amazon sword (amazonicus) 1 small ocelot sword 1 small melon sword few stems of giant elodea (egeria densa) java moss some kind of chain sword?, has long skinny leaves and some other kind of stem plant Alternanthera reineckii var. roseafolia narrow leaf chain sword FISH 13 cardinal tetras 10 brown pencil fish 1 baby blue diamond discus (size of a dime) 3 undescribed specie of corydora 1 Amano shrimp 1 nannostomus trifasciatus (type of pencil fish) Big thanks to Mike Hellweg for the fish, luckily he lives 20 minutes away. sorry for the bad pics, not a photographer. The tank is underneath a 200 gallon and then there is a 150 about 3ft in front of it, so hard to get a good angle. I tried though lol. Looks so much better in person. ![]()

nice! you should try using a setting without flash my camera takes the best aquaria pics on the nighttime illuminations setting like for taking nighttime pics of lit objects like buildings or lit statues then i just shut the flash off. i have a point and shoot fuji so it took awhile of trying different combos of settings to get to take ok pics .good luck!

yea I'll have to try that. The problem is that there is so much glare from the other fish tanks around. Its like trying to take a picture in a mirror maze. Ill have to play around with it and see what I can do.

UPDATES 10-23-09
Tank has been going for 2 straight weeks now. Plants are constantly giving off oxygen bubbles and the stem plants seem to be growing at a pretty good rate. Using the full line of Fluorish fertilizers including the root tabs. I am still doing homework on plant species and am in the market for some more plants. I think I may take out the bigger sword for a stem plant or something more "full" looking. Giant elodea is just to hide the heater and hagen mini filter. Will get replaced with something else. Here are some pics freshly planted alternanthera reineckii var. roseafolia, lost some leaves when planting should grow back and look bushy though. Also ![]() long view of tank ![]() undescribed specie of corydora from ian fuller

Well it's been about a month since I had an update so I thought I'd throw up some progress pics. The growth is amazing compared to my first set of pics lol. I was shocked. Not bad for my first real attempt at growing plants with DIY co2, ferts etc.
Tank now has 2213 Eheim filter. FISH 13 cardinal tetra 10 brown pencils 8 pygmy corydora 3 corydora sp. 3 danio chaprae ----romoved 1 farlowella ----added 12-19-09 1 blue diamond discus 1 Amano shrimp many cherry shrimp couple of blue shrimp PLANTS Echinodorus amazonicus Echinodurus tenellus Echinodorus ozelot Echinodorus kleiner bar Althernanthera Reineckii var. Roseafolia Eichornia diversifolia Flame moss subwassertang sagittaria subulata cryptocorn lutea Ludwigia repens x arcuata Got a new camera phone (LG Tritan) that blows my actual camera away as far as settings etc. After I played with white balance and brightness I got some decent pics. Alternanthera is starting to fill in and new growth is dominant. (don't mind the yellow ph probe lol) ![]() ![]() ID this for me plz.....I will make a ID thread in plants section also. EDIT* Ludwigia repens x arcuata ![]() And here is a cool pic I got while messing around with it.

No Algae issues? I have a 20H that's giving me some problems... Yours looks great! What's the red plant you have in there?

That last pic up there almost looks like a Japanese tansai painting! You should blow that up, frame it, and hang it on a wall!

No algae issues for me. Atleast not major ones. I did have a green dust algae (GDA) breakout but it went away. I was told/researched that phosphorus can cause it to go away. So i dosed more phosphorus and it went away. I also scrapped the glass and massaged leaves before sucking out water for water changes. It has never came back. The red plant is alternanthera reineckii var. roseafolia. It's a fairly easy less demanding red plant to grow. A bit slow growing to, so its not to much of a hassle for a beginner. It has came a long way since purchase. I actually just de-rooted it all and did a massive trim on it. Put some cuttings in my new hi-tech 20 to see if I can notice a growth change. It was much more overgrown since I took these pics. My sword is much bigger to lol. I should of took pics before I did the trim.

I got a few updates nothing special. But I removed the danios as they started to get a little bossy and chased my cardinals around. I added a farlowella to clean a bit of algae...he has been munching non-stop so far(he will go into my new 20 gallon when its water is stable). Cool fish to. I de-rooted all the stem plants and did a hefty trim. Removed the eichornia diversifolia and crypt. lutea. Put those in my new 20 gallon to help cycle a bit. I also notice my first flower stalk on my Saggitaria subulata! I will try to get a pic if it opens up!
