DevinWolfe's Office 10G

This is my tank on my workbench at the office. I spend anywhere from 4 to 5 hours next to it, so I will likely try to make it a busy tank, but simple enough to maintain.

I keep this tank next to my 2.5G shrimp tank:
http://www.plantedtank.net/forums/ta...rimp-tank.html

Dimensions:
20 x 10 x 12 (standard 10G)

Substrate:
Soil Master Select - Charcoal

Lighting:
2 x 10W CF bulbs

Filtration:
Marineland Pengiun 100 Bio-Wheel

Heater:
Marineland 50W

CO2:
DIY 2 x 1L bottle with Rhinox 1000 Diffuser

Ferts:
EI dosing with ferts from GLA (thanks Orlando!)
The tank is unnattended on weekends so on Friday I dose macros in the a.m. and traces in the p.m. with WCs on Mondays

Stock:
8 Cardinal Tetras
5 Spotted Corys

I just rescaped this tank and took all of it's plants for my 50G. I'm still not sure what my plans for this tank are yet, but I will probably start restocking it's plants this week.

Any ideas? I think once it starts to cycle I may do shrimp and cardinal tetras but that is still up in the air.

Crypts, Ludwiga repens, Rotala rotundifolia, Java fern would grow great in the soil.

I'm thinking maybe I'd like to do a lot of shrimp. I have never kept shrimp and have wanted to try it for some time.

If I do shrimp I will likely add 5-6 cardinal or neon tetras.

In a shrimp tank would I still need bottom feeders? (ottos) I don't want to overcrowd the tank.

I received a couple of my plant order from S&S and put some of them in the tank.

Current stock:
8 Cardinal Tetras
3 Ottos
2 Mystery Snails

Once I'm sure it has cycled or at least stabalized completely I would like to get some Cherry Red Shrimp. About how many could I get away with comfortably with my current stock?

I filled in a bit of the foreground and put some stems in the back around the driftwood. I am saving a small space in front of the filter intake for a mid-ground plant to block some of the filter and heater from view. I am thinking a small Java Fern. (first pic)

I still have a semi-large space behind the driftwood that I would like to put a larger plant. I have just not decided what, yet. I have a few large Anubias that may look nice back there. (second pic)

I picked up some new Spotted Corys at the new Petco so I will be taking my 3 Ottos home to the 4 that are already in my 50G.

I also set up my new Rhinox 1000 diffuser with my DIY and I am gettinga super fine mist after about 18 hours of the CO2 building up pressure. Thanks Haaganize!

Edit: I will put up a pic as soon as I can get time to grab a resonable camera.

I have decided I would really like to add shrimp to this tank. I have more plants on the way (moss and ferns).

Is there anything I need to do differently with this tank for it to be "shrimp safe?" I assume shrimp do alright on this substrate as it is topped with sand.

I was thinking something along the lines of about 20 RCS, that wouldn't overcrowd the tank would it?

A newer pic of the tank after finishing plants.

I also hooked up the Rhinox 1000 Diffuser to my DIY Co2(Thanks again Haagenize!)

I will be redoing the substrate in this tank soon, maybe Thursday after office hours. This is due to the issues I am having in my larger tank that uses this same soil and sand.

I have some moss and more ferns coming in and I will have CRS in the tank soon after I redo the substrate. I will just wait long enough to make sure it's stable.

The photo in the post above was taken yesterday around 10 a.m. and the slightly dark area of the substrate has nearly doubled in size as of this morning.

When my 50G's substrate turned dark below the surface I lost 10 fish within 2 days. I will be tearing this tank down tonight after hours and using SMS or Turface as the new substrate. I gave the tank a 50% WC to hold it over until I can come back to the office after dinner.

Hope I don't have a mass die-off before I get back, wish me luck...

Well, the tank is finished. I really should have cleaned the glass before the pics, I didn't realize it was that dirty.

I lost a lot of Blyxa because I left it rolled up in a paper towel that dried up overnight. They rest of the plants should be alright, though.

I should have MTS showing up sometime this week and my Cherry Shrimp in a couple weeks (Thanks Epicfish for letting me delay shipment).

On to the pics.

Right after finishing and letting filter remove the cloud.

After moss was added to new rock and driftwood. (Thanks Smoq)

Thanks Hydophyte! These two tanks have been such a pain lately.

The two very shoddy looking Blyxa in the front were eaten by the Corys I think. I'm sure they were dead anyway. I added some new stems that I received today. Thanks n00dl3! Hygo Difformis (Wisteria)

Anyone know what the 8 Cardinals would stop swimming around? They seem to just hide behind the driftwood and never come out when I'm close to the tank. They're all over the place when I first come in and sit down at the bench, even before their lights are on.

Should I get a few more to make them more comfortable?

Pice before stems were added:

Tank looks great!

If it makes you feel any better, I'm a Blyxa murderer too. Mine only lasted 2 days before the shrimp chowed down and had it gone in half a day.

Now, for my suggestion to EVERYONE who has the printed backgrounds....black or a solid pattern [ex. rocks] makes the plants/fish stand out MUCH more. Also, I'm not sure why your cardinals have stopped swimming everywhere. I think they might have setup territories or even a breeding spot.

Good luck!

Thanks! I will definitely be swapping that background. I have just not made my mind up between black or blue.

I may actually transfer those cardinals to my 50G and get some smaller fish for the 10G, just tossing around ideas though.

All that I really must do is work on my photography skills. The camera seems to do alright, I just suck with settings, focus, and other details.

IMO Black looks a LOT better and more clean...if that makes since. Oh well, it turns a dark green sometimes though when algae gets a good hold on the back.
