How many Neons?
Im planting my 60 gallon at the moment and for fish I have a plan of getting all neon tetras and then getting two full grown discus. I was wondering what everyone thinks would be a good number of neons since they will be the most active fish. My filtraion is for a 100gallon tank with a UV so filtration is no problem

Is it good filtration for a 100g? A filter that says 100g is just barely appropriate for a 60g tank...at least for the purposes of most people here.
As for your question, I would go with 30. Introduce them in batches of 10 so as to not overwhelm your tank biology. |

You could do more than 30, but I would stop there and introduce the discus before adding more. Neons are not exactly messy, but you may have reached the point where more wouldn't look better.

I'd recommend Cardinals instead of Neons for a discus tank. Cardinals will handle the high temps much better than Neons, which are found in cooler waters.

Also, are the discus a pair? If you have only two discus, the dominant fish will pick on the other one until it has health problems. Getting more diffuses the aggression.

I know the thought is to keep cardinals w. discus. But I too have had great success with neons. I keep my water right at 81-82 degrees, which might be a little low for discuss, but seems to be a good temp for all the plants, neons, and discuss. Plants would probably like the temp a little lower.
Anyway, I have only lost 2 of the neons from a batch of 25 I put in back in Feb in a 46 gallon. That is with 4 adult and 1 stunted discuss. I originally had just 2 discuss, and they would fight all the time so I got some more. Then I discovered that I had too much stock and was cleaning my canister- eheim 2236- way more than everybody else had too. Now I have a 75 gallon and added a 2217, and guess what? I want more neons. This never ends. |
