Diseased tetra?

I got some neon tetras from petco the other day, and when I got them home, I found that one is missing gill covers and the gills are very red. The other neons look fine, and the water parameters are good. Does anyone know if this is from a disease, parasite, or poor genetics?

Could be any or all of the above.

I'd definitely quarantine that fish, IME diseases run through neons like wildfire. Has a lot to do with how and where they're usually farmed...

Howdy, welcome to TPT! Has the tetra lost both gill covers, or just the one? The loss of gill covers isn't an early symptom of any common tetra disease, so it's more likely that they were torn off by another fish; although it would seem unusual that both covers are missing. Is the fish displaying any other abnormal traits or behavior?

One neat thing about tetras is that they will refuse to school with any among them that are sick, effectively reducing the spread of disease. This can also act as an early indicator of sickness, even if other symptoms go unnoticed. If not yet quaratined, is this tetra schooling with the others you brought home?

The tetra is missing both covers and is now living with the others. They all seem healthy even though they may have had a few ick spots when I got them. I added some salt and turned the temperature up to 84 deg.
