Well, make it two of us. I've been sitting around for the last 3 months. I actually quit to shorten up my contract with my previous company since I want to move to another one end of this year.

I have been layed off twice in the last 8 years... there is no such thing as a sure thing anymore in the employment aspect of life, we are all just pawns in a big money game.

Left my job March 31 of this year when the company bought out our contracts to move the department overseas. Been looking ever since. Finally recieved an offer for 1/2 what I was making to support Apple products. Since I am already Microsoft certified, when I become Apple certiifed will my brain explode due to the matter - antimatter mix?

Perhaps you're living in the wrong area. A friend of mine just got hired on the spot right out of school, $28K to start.

And he is not bright, just has a photographic memory and is good on tests. We actually started a pool on what day he comes back to our company begging for his old back.

I could also ask the IT guy at my wife's family company if they have any openings if you're open to relocating. Good solid company, stock options, good benefits. 1800 employees and growing.

I got laid off once, about 15 years ago. Once was enough for me. I went back to school and got a job in a unique, constant industry.

Haven't gotten laid off since and don't plan to either!

I'm sorry to hear about all this. God bless you! I'm in so much pain right now its almost unbearable. I'm not seeing face-to-face with my major professor regarding my dissertation. Not to mention he wants THREE chapters that are submitted for publication BEFORE I can bind it into a thesis! (everyone else does it the other way around). I turn something in---I get it back with comments that basically say I write like $hit. Then I change to the recommended...it still sounds like $hit. Then he thinks of a total new direction I should write my research in...another theoretical basis here, another there. Enough ranting

Top this off with my GF getting ready to move to Lubbock, TX to start grad school there, while I'm about to start commuting from ATL to Auburn (1.5 hours---$25 gas round trip) twice a week while I serve as the department's slave...graduate teaching assistant.

Things certainly have been better. But, hey, I look at it this way...we're all still here breathing aren't we?

My employer has presented me with 2 options.. They have found me a job to go to (they dont want to leave me hanging) or they are willing to pay for some "job retraining" and give me 3 months salary.

So this is a tough choice.. I can make my career change like I have been thinking... or I can go to job that will pay me over $6000 a year more then what I make now. I'm not an MCSE.... in fact all my certs have expired, but I have 9 years experience and rather unique skillset. I've worked at this other place before (through my current employer) and they were really interesting. Its a biotechnology firm doing some pretty advanced research.... It would be intersting to be involved with again.

So its not as bad as I thought.. but its still a shock... I"m going out of town for 4 days to camp and think about my options. I'll be back on Monday night.

Wow. Nice to hear they thought highly enough of you to take care of you. Nice employers!

Sounds like you've got a tough decision to make though. Try not to stress out too much over it. They both sound like good options. You'll know when you've made the right choice. It'll just feel right. I've been there too.

Personally, I'd go with the first option. I'd rather have a job and then go take some retraining courses than take the courses and not have a job. Or even better, go talk to the other place yourself about the job and then take the training and 3 months salary!
