nitrite problem or test problem

i have a problem, just put in a new external filter (xp2) in my 22G. The ammonia and nitrite levels increased as expected and then plummeted after several hours running. i always test regularly and recently bought a new nitrite test kit.

I now get a 0.1mg/l reading constantly and can't get it any lower?? for comparison i tested my tap water and got the same 0.1mg/l??

is it possible that i've just got a dud test? before on the previous test pack i was able to get a zero reading no problem! i am using the nutrafin test kits.

any ideas??

Andy,

Where do you live? Do you have high phosphate reading from your tap? Some places close to agricultural area have high PO4 tap and possible nitrite readingalso. But most tap contain less than 0.01 ppm of nitrite (I think). So my guess is faulty test kit.

i'm in northampton in uk. you are correct it shouldn't read like that straight out of the tap. think i'll contact hagen and find out how to get a replacement.

I'm not sure about UK. I go to UK site once in a while and notice that many people have extremely high nitrate coming out from their tap. I really don't want to give you any wrong info here.
