Java Fern Attaching Strategy
I have been looking at a number of Java Ferns in planted tanks and noticed that they seem a lot bushier and fuller than mine, and I suspect this is due to the way they are attached.
I have Java Ferns that are one long rhizome, with a leaf every cm or so. I want know know the best way to lie this on the wood to get that lovely bushy effect. This really depends on where the new leaves grow from. Do they only grow from the ends of the rhizome? Is one particular end a 'growing' end? The options I am seeing: 1) lay the rhizome flat in a line across the wood. 2) lay the rhizome in a 'snake' or 'spiral' shape on the wood, to try to keep the leaves as close to each other as possible. 3) cut the rhizome into several 1"-2" pieces. If the rhizomes grow from the ends, this would seem to provide the bushiest growth. Thoughts? Thanks. |

I would go with number 3. If you cut the rhizome it will grow new rhizome from that cut-part.
