question about mixing flourite

i have 3 bags of flourite (not the red stuff) in my 45 gallon and it looks a little sparse (not deep enough). it is common practise, i believe, to mix flourite with regular gravel, up to 50:50. i have loads of "regular" gravel which is a light color. my question: esthetically, how do people find the fluorite looks with some lightly colored gravel mixed in? (i did mix a bit in a container but it is difficult to tell how this would look over a large area). thanks.

Personally I dont think that light colored gravel would look all that great with flourite, but its pretty much up to you. I would go with a smaller black gravel, it would blend in with the flourite perfectly, plus I just like black.

I did it in my 55 gl and regret it. After a while, it looks like crap. I'm tearing it down now.

You only need 1-2 more bags of flourite. I'd just stick with 100% flourite, for aesthetics and the nutrient benefits.

thanks for your replies and insight. i did a search on this very issue and was surprised to find i couldn't find any posts where it had been addressed before.

(sorry to hear that ninoboy, hope you don't have to throw out a lot of flourite).

so i went to the lfs and explored what they stock for dark coloured gravel. flourite was $35 a bag. not bad. i paid more for each of the 3 bags i had bought. they also had similar sized bags of dark gravel for $26. what's up with that ? anyway i think i'll toss in another bag of flourite and see how the depth looks. if i still need more i'll probably buy a bag of the generic dark gravel. although many of you have had positive comments about it, i don't think i can find a nearby source for the moonsand.
