sand in a 55gal flourite?

Im going to be getting a 55 gallon soon, but do not want to shell out the cash for flourite, i have two bags unopened still would mixing them with small gravel still be effective enough - i really like the look of sand too, my mom had a tank with sand once and lots of rocks and driftwood housing a jardini (think it was a 180) is there some type of fert, i can add to sand for plants?

I mixed Flourite with small natural gravel in my 55G tank and it works just fine. I also added root tabs to give the roots some extra nutrients.
