I just changed my carbon block for the first time. I expected it to be more or less consumed but found it to be mostly intact. In fact, I couldn't tell it from the new one when laid side by side. The inside of the unit was full of what looked like calcium deposit and as far as I could tell, it has been performing normally (lots of bubbles). Anybody know if it's normal for the block to remain as new ?

btw: The red light on the unit came on after 6 months of use.

What size tank are you running it on and are you running it full blast? The Carbo Plus can be a very expensive item to run. One LFS had one running on a 120 gallon display tank and the plants were not doing all that well. So I had them test the pH and kH and it turns out that running full blast the unit was only raising the CO2 levels to 10 ppm.

This is on my 75 gal. Rex. I bought back when I didn't know any better. I've never run it full blast, only about 3 notches up. I suppliment the tank with Flourish Excel and it does fairly well. Might convert to pressurized co2 in the future but I'd like to get my money's worth out of the carbo Plus first.

Hmm.... can you get money out of a black hole? Sounds like someone saying they want to get their money's worth out of the old boat before they sell it.

I bought an extra carbon block along with the unit and I'm just installed it. I'll use it until it wears out or if I upgrade to bottled before then I'll move it into my 29 gal. The money is already into the black hole so all I can do now is lick my wounds.

Just noticed that Big Al's has a special on the Carbo Plus ($119) so there'll probably be a few more people throwing their money away before it disappears from the market.

I doubt it will ever disappear. There will always be those who don't want the perceived hassle of a pressurized system.
