ok i got these from a friend and they were in a poorly kept 30g.i think i know that this type has the rhizome and should be tied to a rock or log...correct?

the tank receives allot of sunshine for the better part of the day plus a flora sun 5000k light of 36 watts in a 55g tank.my zebra danios and fancy guppies are really cleaning the leaves or maybe just eating them?plus the long plants look like they are sprouting new ones on their tips????sorry for the pic quality all i got is a handmedown kodak

any tips or suggestions please?

It's a Java Fern, and yes you were right, it should be tied to driftwood or a rock or something. It's perfectly normal for the older leaves on a Java Fern to get kind of beat-up and tatty looking. Black and brown spots are usually normal, just remove the leaves when they start to look like this.

For Java Fern, their main mode of reproduction is adventitious plantlets. Meaning the baby plants growing from the older leaves is completely normal. I have a Java Fern that has tons of baby plantlets on every single leaf.

Also, I would be careful about the tank being in direct sunlight. It can cause bigtime temperature fluctuations and will most likely cause a lot of algae growth.
