Berried CPO

Thought I'd share a photo of one of my Cambarellus patzcuarensis orange crayfish (CPO for short) These Crays only get to be around 1.5 inches as adults and are a hoot to watch. This female became berried yesterday and now hoping all goes well to birth. They are really peaceful for a Crayfish and do not "landscape" like their larger cousins in a planted tank.

Congrats on the berried gal. I've got a trio in my 6 gal and I hope to join you soon. One female is mottled and a male and female are striped. Great little crays.

This will be my first batch if indeed they are born and I will update with the color of the young. I have also heard they do not breed 100% true, but I just do not know yet.

Awesome, congrats! My female has been hiding out between the rocks for a couple of days, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed

From what I've read, if you have two orange parents then you should get 100% orange babies. If you have brown parents, or one brown parent, then you will get a mixture of both orange & brown offspring.

Tis the season I guess, just found two Black Diamonds berried in my 10g as well

I believe it also has to do with their grand parents if they carry BB,Bb etc.

yeah I think your right, that makes the most sense. But other things I have read say you will never get 100 percent. I guess we will have to wait till Bill has a few generations and can tell us!

congrats. mine have just started hatching today. this is the first one i have seppartated from the rest to see if it helps baby survival. i have had berried females in the past but no babies survived when i just left the female in the main tank. i can see about a half dozen clearish mini-me's walking around the breeder net i have her in now. she is still carrying about a dozen more egs as well. need to setup another tank for the fry today. i love how spunky they are, mine come to the front of the tank whenever they see me walk by.

Not to thread-jack or anything, but how do you feel about CPOs? Are they fragile like CRS? Or are they as hardy as a cherry shrimp? I know comparing a crayfish and shrimp is a bit of a stretch but I have no other experience with crays :-( so I can't compare the two.

CPO adults are as hardy as.... well, any typical crays. they can take pretty much any water type, but prefer harder water. i keep mine in straight tap (ph 7.8-8.0, TDS ~320ppm). they are not long lived though, around 1.5 years. if you do buy them, make sure you get juvi's or like CRS adults,they wont last too long. the young are what i would call "dumb" though. instead of hiding all the time, they posture and flare at anything and hence get eaten by fish more often than not. i only treat CPO's more carefully because of their cost compared to say a regular c. shulfeldtii. hopefully they become more common in the hobby, but they dont breed as readilly so that is the problem. i have had several females killed by overzealous males during mating or right after when berried.
