Danios or Bunnies?

Sloshing more water about from my re-scape, I had a few sprigs of HM in a big tupperware bowl, and scooped a little into a cup to hydrate some tubifex. I look into the cup, and behold! Fry. Teensy, witsy fry.

I had a previous thread in which I found one danio fry in a bucket, and moved him (he's now .5 inches) into my tank, a 15g. Now, I count at least five itsy bitsy (about 2mm) fry in one of my buckets. (Too small for pics with my camera, sorry.)

So, what's the deal? Do leopard/zebra danios always breed like rabbits? I never see eggs or fry in the main tank... Is there any way to avoid sucking up the babies each WC? I don't have another tank, but added a little Whisper filter to the bucket. Am I soon to be overrun with Danios?

Any comments/opinions/expertise are welcome.

doubt you'll be overrun, from what i hear danios lay their eggs one way, pull a u-turn, and come back and eat them

LOL Danios are your Guppies... and Guppies are worse than Bunnies!

Cherry barbs were the same in my 46gal. I tried getting rid of them all together at least 3 times. The last time I gave them all away, about a month later I was doing a big tank overhaul. I was cleaning out my HOB and out pops a tiny male cherry barb into my sink. I've no idea how long it lived in the HOB, but it had to have been either just an egg or a teeny tiny hatchling to have gotten through the filter screen on the intake tube.

Then I went and picked up one of the plates on my UG filter... and there was a female cherry barb.

Well, with one male and one female, you know what ended up happening... So now I have one male cherry barb and 2 females.

Anyone want any cherry barbs?

I just found three more in another bucket. I moved them using a baster... hope it wasn't too harsh for them. I can't get over how tiny they are. It is beyond my ken how they even exist! I've been doing all sorts of changes, pulling plants out and in... I just changed the entire substrate and scape about 10 days ago. Doesn't seem that the danios would feel secure enough to procreate. I also have a remaining pair of cherry barbs, who I thought would eat anything swimming in the tank.

It seems that there may be more than one --- clutch? litter? What is a group of fish eggs called... other than caviar? Anyway, one of the fry is about twice the size of the others, about 1/4 inch. So it is either from a different hatching, or is a different type of fish.

I wasn't looking to breed (fish), but they are so tiny and cute!! Who'da thought WalMart danios would act this way!! Anyone have any tips or stories about you and your fry?

Man, this reminds me of my fire mouth cichlid eggs disappearing on the 3rd or fourth day? (sighs) but hopefully they'll reproduce again.

Now I have seven 2mm (assumed) danio fry, and one 5mm in a 5g bucket. They seem to be eating and doing well. I saw a 2mm one in the tank this evening, but it disappeared before I could suction it up.

There's a reason guppies are feeders....
