New Orleans

Went to the New Orleans Aquarium of the Americas last weekend and was pleased to see a brand new Frog exhibit! Some gorgeous paludariums with MASSIVE Anubias! I couldn't get many good pictures due to the dim lighting and my economy-sized Kodak Digital Camera, but some of the Dart Frogs came out pretty good...

Nice pics Sam! Tree frogs are definitely need little creatures. Gotta love the dart frogs too.

thanks for posting these. i was rushed when i visited last fall and didn't get to spend much time with the frogs.

Love the colours of those frogs. I will bet that those bright colours indicate to birds that those frogs are poisonous. I remeber seeing one of those David Attenborough programs about frog colouration.

everytime i see pics of dart frogs, i am more motivated to set up a habitat and get some!

Very nice pics, you make me wish i could visit this aquarium.

In the wild, dart frogs level of toxicity ranges from the as-long-as-you-don't-lick-me-you're-fine level to touch-me-with-scratches-on-your-hands-and-you-die. Some species might makes your hands tingle for a while, and of course you do not want to touch any sinus membranes or mouth after handling. I've caught a number of different species though and noticed no effects at all.

Once in captivity, toxicity rapidly dwindles, so there seems to be a wild diet connection. Very interesting.

There's a lot of beautiful frogs out there, but my favourite thing about Dendrobatids is their personality--an unfroglike boldness, hopping about in the open throughout the day, displaying and wrestling and such.
