180 gallon EI dosing, is this correct?

Hey TPTers,

I was hoping someone could verify is this is correct, if not please help me adjust my dosing. I am in the process of setting up my 180 as a high tech planted tank and want to make sure I get the dosing correct.

2 1/4 tsp Kno3 3x a Week
3/4 tsp Kh2po4 3x a Week
3/4 tsp CSM+B 3x a Week
3/8 tsp Iron 3x a Week
3 tsp GH Booster once a week

For a 180g tank this dosage looks way off

Are u dosing dry or making a solution?

The values below are closer to the full EI dose.

1 1/2 tsp Kno3 3x a Week
1/4 tsp Kh2po4 3x a Week
3/4 tsp CSM+B 3x a Week
1/4 tsp Iron 3x a Week

? tsp GH Booster once a week

Im not sure which GH booster youre using. The dose seems rather low though. However, not knowing the brand or what level youre shooting for its hard to say for sure. Seachem Equilibrium for example would be 7 teaspoons to raise GH 1 dGH.

If you want to try a free Windows based calculator I'm currently writing, a copy can be downloaded here. I would appreciate a PM if anyone uses this until the updating routines are finalized. It is far from complete but will provide the basic nutrient calculations needed including reporting doses as teaspoon measures.

Default 180 gallon EI dosing, is this correct?

To start out with forgot to mention that all my fertilizers are dry fertilizers from nilcog. So what I ended up doing was I went to http://www.aquaticplantcentral.com/f...ing-guide.html (late last night around 2am) and wanted to figure out what the new EI dose would be for my 180 gallon. So I simply took :

60 80 Gallon
+/- 3/4 tsp KN03 3x a week
+/- tsp KH2P04 3x a week
+/- tsp (20ml) Trace Elements 3x a week
50% weekly water change

+

100 - 125 Gallon
+/- 1 1/2 tsp KN03 3x a week
+/- tsp KH2P04 3x a week
+/- tsp (30ml) Trace Elements 3x a week
50% weekly water change

and added them together, and that is how I cam up with the numbers I have in the first post. Since it's actually around 200 gallons or more of water (with the sump) I took the amounts from the 100-125 and added them to the 60-80 amounts.

As for the GH booster I don't remember excatly how I came up with 3 tsb, but I think I based it off the fact that the amount of GH booster usually matched the amount of CSM+B plus one extra dose. I am using GH booster from nilcog, 3:3:1 K2SO4, CaSO4, MgSO4.

I would love to try out your calculator, but I am on a MAC, I might be able to dig out a PC or borrow from a friend and give it a shot, the ones I have used online are pretty confusing. Have you made your's easier to understand, or does it come with some amazing instructions for non-chemists and mathleets, so they can use the product too?

I run a weekly regime on my 90, which doubled would be:

2 tbsp KNO3
1/2 tsp K2HPO4
2 tsp Plantex

I get enough iron from the csm+b, and for the gh, I just add the last 10 gallons of WC water from the hose.

Anyone else care to weigh in on this? Still looking for a concise answer as to what the dosing should be around. This makes me question if I have been doing my 75 gallon and my 10 gallon correctly now!!

This is what I would dose. You can run the numbers through YANC and see what results your get. I am assuming EDTA 13% iron since it looks like Nilocg adds that type quite often.

For the 200 gallon...
KNO3 1 tsp.
KH2PO4 3/8 tsp.
Plantex 1 tsp.
Iron EDTA 13% 1/4 tsp.
GH Booster 11 tsp. (raises 1 dGH)

For the 75 gallon...
KNO3 3/4 tsp.
KH2PO4 1/8 tsp.
Plantex 1/4 tsp.
Iron EDTA 13% 1/16 tsp.
GH Booster 4 1/8 tsp. (raises 1 dGH)

For the 10 gallon I would not do dry dosing. If you want a solution recipe PM me. The margin for error on tanks that small is simply too large to use dry dosing IMO.

Start at the lower amount and see how it goes. As the plants get established they will probably use more.

Use GH booster only if your water needs it. For soft water fish a GH about 3-5 German degrees of hardness is fine. For hardwater species 9-20 degrees is fine. For most species that have been bred in captivity for many generations the tolerance is very wide.

Thanks for the response so far guys this has been very informative, and helpful.

I don't do a dry dose for the 10g I make a liquid fertilizer, what I do is I combine:
3/8 tsp KNO3
3/32 tsp KH2PO4
18 ml RO water
Then dose 6ml 3 times a week

3/32 tsp CSM+B
3/64 tsp Iron
18 ml RO water
Then dose 6 ml 3 times a week

I also add 1/4 tsp GH Booster once a week, after a water change. But it seems like I am not dosing nearly enough GH booster on either of my high tech aquariums at the moment. I have been only adding 1 TSP GH booster weekly to the 75 gallon previously. I just finished a water change and only added 1 tsp, wonder if I should go put 3 more in there.

Thankfully my 75 gallon dosing is pretty much right where Zorfox suggested, the only place we differ is I use 3/16 tsp KH2PO4 and 1/8 tsp Iron and the GH booster. As for which iron I am using Chelated Iron 13%. Should I stick with what I am using or go with the new dosing and raise the KH2PO4 and reduce the Iron?

this is what I dose to my 180:

2x a week:

2 tsp KNO3
1 tsp KH2PO4
GH booster: 2 Table spoons

3-5x a week: .2-.3 ppm of Fe as CMS+B

I generally will do 1-2x a week water changes, 50-70%.

That's it. If you need more info, then you are over thinking this. It's simple, that's the point.

Thanks everyone for helping me out with the replies. I was not trying to over think the situation or complicate it, I am just attempting to educate myself as to why I dose each fertilizer and why.
