is a CO2 canister necessary? i might go DIY, but i was just wondering, and do u have to buy a special diffuser, cuz i heard all that together might be a little expensive, and me and compressed gases dont work too well together, (kabooom)

CO2 is pretty difficult to go 'ka-boom' if you follow a few easy rules. mainly, keep the tank upright, don't let anything bang against the valve, and don't store it in a place that can rapidly rise in temperature (like leave it in your car, mid-summer, while you work 8 hours).
CO2 isn't flammable...in fact it suffocates a fire. I used to be afraid too, but it's actually much safer to do this, than when I used to homebrew, and had bottles of beer exploding in my closet.
