How to measure KH,GH,CO2 in ppms?

Hola Amigos!

I just bought some test EQ from AP, but I'm not sure how to read the readings and also where I get a CO2 test kit? I read in this forum that people write down "I'm using 30ppm of co2......"

I got a CO2 indicator from Red Sea but just tells me with a color measure if the co2 leaves are safe. Also, I got the KH and GH test kit from AP but I'm sure how to read. This is what I got

Supposedly I have to count the number of drops than read the table to get the number. For my KH i got 5 Drops until the color change and the table said that is equal to 89.5 for the GH 8 Drops that means 143.2.

Is that means that my KH is 89.9ppms and my GH is 143.0ppms????

Also, Where can i get a CO2 test or indicator in ppms?

Thanks!!!

Hi,

Yes, you got the KH and GH correct. one degree = 17.9 ppm

Red Sea indicator has blue, green, and yellow chart.
Green is good, and if you have 4KH solution inside the indicator, that means you have around 30ppm

For some reason, Rea Sea instruction tells you to use the tank water inside the drop checker. Don't use your tank water. Be sure to mix or buy a solution that has 4KH for it.

Regards,
Kevin

I've been looking for some of the "4KH" solution and I can't find it. I have the same C02 tester (1ml tank water and two drops of solution). If anyone out there knows where to get a 4KH solution, please post. Thanks!!

If you have RO/DI or distilled water, you can make 4dKH easily.

Go on to eBay and buy a gram scale for less than $15.00, if you can get the accuracy to .01 of a gram it's better, if not the .1 gram accuracy is ok too.

Mix one gallon of RO/DI or distilled water with 0.448 gram of baking soda would yield 4dKH solution.

If you are having problem measuring that small amount you can:
mix 5 gallons of RO/DI or distilled water with 2.24 gram of baking soda.

5 gallons of this should last around 1000 years! literally

Be sure that your RO/DI come from a new RO/DI system, old RO/DI system has contaminants and would throw off your reading. If your system is old, you should replace DI resin and/or all RO filters including the membrane.

Also, you can buy the solution at http://liquidarthome.net/khstandard too!

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Kevin
